Breeding Reports

Avicularia avicularia
Common Pink Toe
Initial Pairing Date | June 18, 2024
Successful? | Yes
Spiderlings Yielded | 60
Total Time Elapsed | 61 days (until pulled)
Observations and Timeline | Below:
-
June 17 | Male introduced to the female via "shark-tanking" and female is fed to lessen chances of cannibalism. Humidity in the enclosure is artificially (albeit slightly) raised for about a week as to simulate mating season conditions.
-
June 18 | First pairing. "Shark-tank" opened and male physically exposed to the female. Female initiation as vibrations is eventually reciprocated by both parties. Male advances and female allow him for the most part, though there are slight issues. Male completes insertion and bolts, with the female rubbing swollen epigastric furrow. Male captured and returned to enclosure.
-
June 25 | Second pairing. No use of the "shark-tank" technique and female fed the previous night. Male is hesitant, but after approximately ten minutes engages with the female. This second insertion lasted significantly longer than the first, yet the female displays no indicator of a successful insertion immediately as previous. Male captured and returned to enclosure.
-
July 5 | Intense nesting behavior exhibited by the female, Excessive webbing in the corner of the enclosure along with significant weight gain.
-
July 9 | Egg sac is laid in the aforementioned heavy webbing at the nesting site. Several feedings using crickets were attempted but met with disinterest or defensiveness.
-
August 18 | Egg sac is pulled from female, and subsequently opened to reveal first instar slings. These slings are then separated into a small 16 oz deli cup. Every day the side of the deli cup is lightly misted with water to keep humidity while avoiding the spiderlings themselves.
-
September 10 | First babies begin to molt into second instar, counting twelve initial spiderlings. Eventually, the rest of the spiderlings follow.
-
September 13 | All babies are given their own 16 oz deli cup and separated, counting sixty total spiderlings.
-
September 16 | After the deaths of two "runts," fifty-eight spiderlings remained. Fifty-five spiderlings were sold, leaving three left in my possession.
